BMW E70

Same module family as the E90 — FRM, JBE and CAS — plus a tailgate wiring loom that works itself to death, and the first FlexRay bus in a production car.

The tailgate is the known weak point: the wiring runs through flexible rubber boots at the top of the hatch, flexes on every opening, and the conductors eventually break. Dead license plate lights, a tailgate that will not release, rear wiper faults — often one broken wire bundle, not three failures.

The footwell module matches the E90 — lights and windows dead or stuck after a voltage event. The airbag control unit is the ACSM rather than the E90’s MRS, and the E70 was the first production car to use FlexRay, which BMW applied only to the Adaptive Drive damping — so a damping fault on this car can be a bus fault.

For a battery drain, BMW's figure is 40 mA after 60 to 70 minutes on cars with a telematics unit, 30 minutes without.

From a documented source: BMW training, Power Management; Wikipedia, FlexRay; bimmerscan.com (ACSM); go-parts.com (tailgate wiring).

Modules that fail on this one

  • CAS (Car Access System)The gatekeeper on E-series BMWs and the F01/F10/F25 family — ignition switch, key check, immobilizer and terminal control in one module.
  • FRM (footwell module)The footwell module on E-series BMWs, Mini R5x and the F01/F10/F25 family — exterior lights, front windows, mirrors — and the module that can corrupt itself when voltage drops.
  • IBS (intelligent battery sensor)The sensor on the battery negative terminal that runs the whole charging strategy — and the reason a new battery needs registering.
  • JBE (junction box electronics)The E90-generation junction box module — wipers, rear windows, locking, heating outputs and a gateway role — so one fault shows up as half the car complaining at once.
  • SZL (steering column switch centre)The switch cluster and clock spring behind the steering wheel — turn signal and wiper stalks, wheel buttons and the airbag feed pass through it, and the steering angle sensor lives in it.

Work this generation comes in for

  • Diagnostics & Electrical TroubleshootingComplex, intermittent and non-standard faults in electronic systems and the digital data buses (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, MOST), and in the wiring itself: parasitic drains, water damage, chewed or brittle harnesses.
  • FRM3 Footwell Module RepairRepair of the FRM3 footwell module — the box behind dead lights, stuck windows and unresponsive signals on E-Series BMW and Mini. $200, comes back plug & play.
  • Control Unit Replacement & AdaptationFull-cycle adaptation and synchronization of both new and used control units, component protection removal, and configuration to the specific car.
