Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII

The current flagship — the first car on Rolls-Royce's aluminum Architecture of Luxury, later shared with the Cullinan and the second Ghost.

Phantom VIII introduced Rolls-Royce's own aluminum spaceframe, the Architecture of Luxury, in 2017; the Cullinan and the second-generation Ghost followed onto it.

Its electronics are those of the BMW G-series of the same years, and the recall record shows it: 2018–2019 Phantoms were in the same NHTSA campaign for back-up camera and display settings as the G-series 3, 5, 7 and 8 Series and X3 to X7, among others (19V-684). Recall 21V-855 covers 2019–2022 Phantoms whose central information display may not rise to its correct position, leaving the rearview camera image partly blocked.

Rolls-Royce's own dealer bulletins for the Phantom VIII and the Cullinan (RR11/12, RR31), filed with NHTSA, include these electrical items. The message "Steering effort and/or steering behaviour is changed", with fault 4822E2 stored, is the 12 Ah auxiliary battery for the electric steering — the small one in the trunk, not the larger auxiliary battery in the engine bay — failing because the BCU 150 does not charge it properly. The test is that battery's voltage at full steering lock: under 12 V, it is damaged. The fix replaces the battery and the BCU 150 together, and only when that fault is stored; a new battery alone is likely to fail again. The bulletin covers cars built up to July 2020.

Message 759, "Safety function of doors", comes from the rear coach doors: open one hesitantly, or open and close it in quick succession, and its pre-latch and main-latch sensors disagree for more than 1.5 seconds; the coach door module can store 031B0B or 031B0C (from I-level 19-11-5xx). Cycling the door slowly clears it, and the check that follows is whether the door moves freely. The power steering-column adjustment can also stop working once the cabin passes about 50 °C (122 °F), with 0304C7 stored in the BDC; replacing its control unit cures it only on cars at I-step 20-03-5xx or later.

Work this generation comes in for

  • Diagnostics & Electrical TroubleshootingComplex, intermittent and non-standard faults in electronic systems and the digital data buses (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, MOST), and in the wiring itself: parasitic drains, water damage, chewed or brittle harnesses.
  • ECU Programming & CodingProgramming, resetting, pairing and recoding control units of any complexity: powertrain, transmission, comfort modules, body electronics and multimedia.
  • Control Unit Replacement & AdaptationFull-cycle adaptation and synchronization of both new and used control units, component protection removal, and configuration to the specific car.
  • Airbag, Safety & ADASDiagnosis and repair of airbag, safety and driver-assistance systems — modules, sensors and the faults they leave behind after a hit.
