The F01 was the first BMW to use FlexRay across the whole car rather than for one system; the E70 X5 had used it only for the damping.
CAS4 — the successor to the CAS2 and CAS3 of the E90 era — handles the key, immobilizer and terminal control, with the FRM3 footwell module and IBS energy management alongside. The classic complaint is a battery drained by a control unit that will not let the car sleep. On these cars the central gateway (ZGM) records which unit inhibited sleep mode, and that record is where the diagnosis starts; BMW's figure for a sleeping F01 is 7 to 21 mA after 30 minutes.

Modules that fail on this one
- CAS (Car Access System)The gatekeeper on E-series BMWs and the F01/F10/F25 family — ignition switch, key check, immobilizer and terminal control in one module.
- FRM (footwell module)The footwell module on E-series BMWs, Mini R5x and the F01/F10/F25 family — exterior lights, front windows, mirrors — and the module that can corrupt itself when voltage drops.
- IBS (intelligent battery sensor)The sensor on the battery negative terminal that runs the whole charging strategy — and the reason a new battery needs registering.
Work this generation comes in for
- Diagnostics & Electrical TroubleshootingComplex, intermittent and non-standard faults in electronic systems and the digital data buses (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, MOST), and in the wiring itself: parasitic drains, water damage, chewed or brittle harnesses.
- ECU Programming & CodingProgramming, resetting, pairing and recoding control units of any complexity: powertrain, transmission, comfort modules, body electronics and multimedia.
- Control Unit Replacement & AdaptationFull-cycle adaptation and synchronization of both new and used control units, component protection removal, and configuration to the specific car.
- Retrofits & Feature ActivationRetrofitting genuine options and factory equipment, and activating hidden features, navigation and multimedia systems.
