Rolls-Royce Cullinan

The Phantom VIII's Architecture of Luxury under the SUV body, with all-wheel drive.

The Cullinan shares its aluminum Architecture of Luxury with the Phantom VIII, a platform built for rear- or all-wheel drive; the Cullinan uses the all-wheel-drive version.

Its electronics are those of the BMW G-series of the same years: the 2019 Cullinan was in the same NHTSA campaign for back-up camera and display settings as the G-series 3, 5, 7 and 8 Series and X3 to X7, among others (19V-684). 2019 cars were also recalled because their brake lights may not be bright enough (19V-612).

It shares the Phantom VIII's dealer bulletins, filed with NHTSA: the steering message with fault 4822E2 that traces to the 12 Ah steering battery and the BCU 150 charging it, message 759 from the rear doors, and the steering-column adjustment that stops working above about 50 °C (122 °F) in the cabin.

Its own bulletins: after a programming session with ISTA 4.25.x the audio amplifier could fail coding — Rolls-Royce technical support coded it remotely, and the bulletin names ISTA 4.25.3x as the fix. A door that will not close with the close-assist button is, when there is a knock inside the door, most likely the close-assist motor come loose from its bracket; otherwise its initialization may have been lost. The bulletin re-initializes and re-tests before anything else, and replaces the motor only if it is damaged or has failed. On a very small number of cars, one of the engine's 16 ground connections may not have been tightened to specification at assembly, which can light the check-engine lamp or stop the engine starting.

Work this generation comes in for

  • Diagnostics & Electrical TroubleshootingComplex, intermittent and non-standard faults in electronic systems and the digital data buses (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, MOST), and in the wiring itself: parasitic drains, water damage, chewed or brittle harnesses.
  • ECU Programming & CodingProgramming, resetting, pairing and recoding control units of any complexity: powertrain, transmission, comfort modules, body electronics and multimedia.
  • Control Unit Replacement & AdaptationFull-cycle adaptation and synchronization of both new and used control units, component protection removal, and configuration to the specific car.
  • Airbag, Safety & ADASDiagnosis and repair of airbag, safety and driver-assistance systems — modules, sensors and the faults they leave behind after a hit.
