What it usually turns out to be
Owner printouts word it "ZGM: Synchronization process for FlexRay failed". bmv.parts, a code database, says the gateway stores it when FlexRay synchronization fails, "sometimes with no obvious symptom", and lists intermittent start-stop unavailability among the effects.
In a thread on a 2019 M2 Competition, CD0487 sat beside a start-stop sensor code with nothing wrong in use. A reply said there was "absolutely nothing wrong", that it could be cleared, and later that it is very common and will not harm anything; the owner cleared it and it came back after about 250 to 500 km, and a dealer had called it normal. The replies suggest running the FlexRay sync service function (under gateway, in ISTA) and say a gateway software update may not reduce these entries, which they call insignificant, though they see them on an F31 now and then.
A 2015 F30 320i thread is different: CD0487 appears among wheel-speed, ICM speed-signal, ABS and DSC, cruise, steering-assist and restraint faults that began before the owner replaced a battery that had tested at 17 percent health. The reply points out that most of those faults need input from all four wheel speed sensors, and the owner then found both rear sensors reading zero. CD0487 was one entry among many there.
bmv.parts' fix list is in this order: read the full fault memory and the other modules' bus faults, check battery voltage, update the gateway software, inspect the gateway connectors and FlexRay wiring, and replace the gateway only if the fault persists with a confirmed bus problem.

Seeing CD0487 on your car?
I come to the car, read the modules and trace the fault to the actual wire, connector or module.
