Headlight range control (LWR): system failed

8041B6

The headlight levelling system reports failure, with a headlight vertical aim message in the cluster. The threads read show it with a failing levelling (TMS) module, after a headlight conversion, and on a car where a dealer quoted a whole headlight but the owner then found the harness to a ride-height sensor cut.

What it usually turns out to be

On a 2012 F30 the owner saw the "headlight vertical aim control failure" message and the driver-side daytime running light cutting out for half a second about ten times in a 30-minute drive. The wiring to both headlights and the levelling lever were fine. A new TMS module stopped the flicker but not the message. A reply said to inject the CAFD into the TMS, VO code it and initialize the lights in ISTA+, and offered to continue by private message; that advice is unconfirmed. Sixteen months later the owner reported that a second new TMS module (a Vemo V20-73-0196) needed no coding and there were no issues afterwards.

A 2018 F30 LCI owner got the same code straight after converting from LED to adaptive LED headlights with coding done by a friend. Everything worked except the height adjustment; the thread has no reply.

On an F22 2-series, a dealer told the owner without connecting a scanner that a sensor inside the headlight meant replacing the whole unit. A reply said to check every wiring connection first and get a scan elsewhere. Another reply pointed at the ride-height leveling sensors, one on the front driver lower control arm and another on the rear passenger control arm. In February 2024 the owner reported what he found on a lift: the harness going into the leveling sensor was cut, which he thinks happened because someone had previously worked in that area and left the harness unsecured. He ordered a new sensor and a piggyback harness; the thread does not say whether that cleared the code. That finding contradicts the dealer's sensor-inside-the-headlight claim.
